Designing information before designers: print for everyday life in the 19th century

This January 2010 event took place at the St Bride Foundation, off Fleet Street in London – an area steeped in print history. Reading University researchers Paul Stiff, Paul Dobraszczyk, and Mike Esbester persuaded us that many interactions of everyday life in the nineteenth century were revolutionized by print and made new demands on newly literate audiences. Their case is that Victorian 'information design' was an intelligent, little known ancestor of today's graphic design.
